Thousands and thousands of books have been written
discussing the reasons why some believe and why some do not believe in the existence
of the Supreme Being, we call God. Some try to make it a scientific case, while
others insist that it is a personal matter of Belief. Both parties might have
points that support their belief system.
The question that always bothered me was: “should I have an
answer to all questions before I make my mind whether to believe in God or not believe in God?” With our limited
knowledge and span of life, and with Science jumping to new levels by the
second, I doubt that any human being can decide for himself in a rational way
whether Faith in a Supreme Being/Creator is proper or not.
Actually, I see two main conflicting messages around me:
1.
There is order in the
world, thus there should be an intelligent creator.
2.
There is chaos in the
world, thus there is no intelligent creator, but rather a set of billions and
billions of Random events.
And scientists are divided around the above point.
I would never expect scientists to provide a proof of God,
or to be able to describe His features. The most ambitious point where science
can get is to prove intelligence or lack of it.
Thus, based on the above factors alone, accompanied with
Human Bias, and for the sake of argument, let us assume that there are equal
chances that there might or might not be a rational Intelligent designer of the
universe.
As a conclusion, Science is unable to prove or deny the existence
of God.
But I personally believe in God. Not that I have a physical
scientific proof, but rather because I chose to believe in God.
I will not present the huge
number of unexplainable phenomenon (which we Christians call “miracles”) that i personally witnessed as a proof for the existence of God, as
science people will jump to dismiss this by claiming that:
1.
It might be the mental
power of people. (i.e. psychological factors)
2.
Whatever is not explainable
today might become explainable tomorrow with the advance of science, and thus will not be considered a miracle anymore.
I chose to believe in God because of much simpler reasons:
1.
Because believing in an
intelligent God who cares for His creatures gives me hope for a better life,
and this will be a moral support for a better life here and now. Hope always gives an individual a push to fight for a higher standard of living, better living conditions, achieve future dreams. Also, hope is a stick which you lean into when you feel overwhelmed and can not continue anymore.
2. Because studies show that
People who believe in God and pray are healed faster than others. “Being a practicing Christian is good for your health, according to a report by a group of doctors, because it makes you happier and more optimistic.”
3.
Because believing in God
will add virtue and goodness to my life. Among which is the virtue of “giving”… (This is
just one of the examples). A study on giving to charity proved that states which have more religious orientations in the US tend to give more money to charities.
For all the above selfish facts, I believe in God. There are hundreds of more reasons for me to believe in God, but the above constitute undeniable facts which are not controversial and does not require a few Ph.Ds to understand.
Westerners should start considering this. Faith in God is
not about Heaven and hell. It is about the here and now. It is related to the
promise of Jesus to give life “more Abundantly”…
I believe in God for all the above selfish reasons, and I am grateful to God for that.
